"Methodologies for Interactive Networked Enterprises"

The rise of e-commerce and digital economy, the changing nature of information systems research and the change of paradigms in it in the recent years is challenging heavily the Scandinavian approach of participative and local Information Systems development and decision making. Networks, mobile devices, Web services and vision of Semantic Web are changing cardinally the environment of organizational and personal work. In this volatile world, advancement of enterprise modeling approaches and requirements engineering remains a key direction in the information systems field.
Modern business and supporting IT systems are constantly facing problems such as rapidly changing business environments and growing complexity of the business activities that require adequate and instant changes in the systems governing the business. Such problems invoke the need for new methodological approaches and instruments both in the field of enterprise business processes reengineering and system development life cycles. Newly emerging information technologies also influence the structure of the modern enterprise management as well as business and information systems that are shifting towards network-based interactive environment.

These new issues stimulate the growth of certain research areas including but not restricted to:
    a) new approaches in the area of requirements engineering, such as business rules-based, model-driven approaches;
    b) methodologies for ERP systems;
    c) knowledge, information and data services for Government IS;
    d) emerging IS development methods and tools;
    e) e-business process development based on Web services;
    f) dynamic service composition for semantic queries.

In order to improve the quality of research activities in the European countries (Nordic and Baltic states in particular) cooperation and interaction of the research organizations and members of academic societies should be intensified through the research training activities such as workshops, lectures and tutorials, doctoral consortiums, integrated research projects, etc. This will substantially enlarge the potential of research and research training in Information systems area in Nordic and Baltic countries.

Because of great variety of methods, tools and expert profiles involved today in Information systems field, two important problems may be acknowledged there:

  • Lack of integration of different methodologies and tools;
  • Poor collaboration between different expertise groups.

The proposed network should bring results for improvement of the state of the art in research, training and collaboration in Information systems area in Nordic and Baltic countries. The participants of the network may exchange and increase knowledge as they have core competence in the different, topical fields:

Field of competence

Aalborg University

Human-computer interaction; data warehousing and on-line analytical processing

University of Skövde

Business process modeling; systems development methodology adaptation

Norwegian University of Science and Technology
Conceptual models of information and information processes; workflow analysis and design.

Agder University

Systems Development process improvement; object-oriented development; organisational change management and evaluation

Kaunas University of Technology

Model driven requirements engineering; business rules approach; semantic composition of Web services

University of Gdansk

Information systems development; object-oriented systems; Unified Modeling Language for systems development; application prerequisites of ERP and CRM systems as well as MDA and SOA; business process modeling

Jönköping University

Enterprise modelling; ontology engineering; competence modelling and model based software engineering

These fields represent different aspects of today information systems and they must work in synergy to ensure professional work of social communities for benefits of networked enterprises and business systems on the Web. Today there are the large needs of Information Technology specialists owning inter-disciplinary knowledge and skills, and understanding possible ways of interoperability between different fields. So the network will give possibility for researchers of participating organizations, especially for young people, to be involved into intensive training by research in combined areas.
The aims of collaborative research

  • Integration of knowledge-based methods into Web and Enterprise application development;
  • Raising level of abstraction in conceptual modelling, manipulation with models, mappings between different formalisms of conceptual modelling (EER, ORM, UML), bridging them for ontology specification and design;
  • Evolvement of business process modelling methodologies, alignment with service-based software architectures;
  • Creation of adequate processes for requirements engineering and networked Enterprise systems development facing with multiple methodologies, tools and expertise groups.
